The Types Of Keratosis And Their Respective Treatments

Are you speculating what those blemishes on your skin are? This is called keratosis – the development of excess protein named keratin in the skin. There are primarily three essential reasons for obtaining treatment, namely, skin cancer prevention, eradication of discomfort and improvement of physical appearance. Since you can choose from a list of keratosis treatment options, it is substantial to discern which of them is most appropriate for you – by checking the keratosis type you have and discovering its cause. This will be a bit difficult since there are three types of keratosis. These are the actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis and keratosis pilaris which we will be disussing along with their respective treatments.
Also ordinarily known as “solar keratosis” and “senile keratosis, actinic keratosis will be the first in our agenda. The appearance of bumps that are consolidated, rough and diverse in color but usually reddish to brownish on sun-exposed body parts is its manifestation. Its most frequent causes are prolonged exposure to the sun’s damaging rays and old age. Though you seldom experience pain or irritation, this type is dreaded for its precancerous state. Since this type eventually leads to skin cancer, it is a must to receive appropriate treatment. The use of medicines, the use of cryogens, the use of laser, the use of light combined with dye, the use of high electric current or surgery are the treatment preferences for actinic keratosis.
On the other hand, seborrheic keratosis is characterized by the presence of lesions somehow similar to actinic keratosis which manifest anywhere on the body but on the anterior and posterior chest most of the time. But its slippery or greasy property is what makes it very different from actinic keratosis. In addition, this does not develop to cancer. Therefore, you will worry only about your physical appearance and the minor skin complications that result from your skin touching your apparel. Genetics and prolonged sun exposure are the causes of seborrheic keratosis . Since this is not a precursor to cancer, treatment is actually unnecessary. But if we are talking about physical appearance, there are several ways with which we can remove these unwanted lesions. As with actinic keratosis, the affected individual can choose among laser treatments, electrocautery, surgery, curettage or cryosurgery.
Lastly, keratosis pilaris, commonly known as follicular keratosis, like seborrheic keratosis, has a genetic origin. This is also characterized by rough bumps on the skin, usually red and that are usually located at the back and outer arm. Due to the excess thickening of keratin, hair follicles are enclosed in skin and eventually form into these tiny rock-like skin growths. It is also benign, like seborrheic keratosis, so treatments are only for the manifestations. Symptoms are managed with photodynamic therapy, laser therapy or the use of medications.
In sum, each type of keratosis has a number of appropriate treatments. Therefore, to avoid all of the aforementioned consequences, you need to maintain your skin integrity. And this is done through proper diet, adequate hydration, regular exercise and adequate rest and sleep.
