Hyperkeratosis can be a problem for all people of all skin tones. Hyperkeratosis is thickening of the skin and can appear in many forms on various areas on the body in many forms. Often, however, people with darker skin tones will experience hyperkeratosis differently to those with fair skin and they can even have more severe occurrences of hyperkeratosis.
Keratosis pilaris, which appears as rough bumps (known as chicken skin) can be unsightly. These hard bumps that cover the hair follicles can affect areas such as the backs of the arms, upper legs and buttocks among other areas. Keratosis pilaris may look different on people with dark skin tone – this form of hyperkeratosis can resemble thousands of small black heads or dark blemishes on the skin. Be cautious of treatments containing acids or skin bleaching agents, as these can weaken the skin. Take care when treating dark patches of hyperkeratosis with skin lightening products, as these can cause hypo-pigmentation (a condition that causes the skin to become white) when used on dark skin. Hypo-pigmentation can be a more unsightly problem than hyperkeratosis, so use these treatments sparingly. Thickened skin on the elbows, knees and feet can also manifest on the palms of people with ethnic skin tones. This form of hyperkeratosis can appear more prominent on people with dark skin and it can be accompanied by darkening or yellowing of the skin. Seek medical advice before you apply chemicals to your skin. Natural remedies which are safe for people with ethnic skin include taking flaxseed oil and omega-3. Salmon is very high in omega-3. Keeping the skin hydrated is the best way to treat hyperkeratosis. Invest in a humidifier to keep the air around you hydrated and drink plenty of water. Cleanse gently and moisturize the area that is affected. Exfoliation with natural products such as almond meal and olive oil can be very beneficial. Do not subject the area to harsh exfoliation, as this can make the area irritated and red. The aim of exfoliation is to hydrate your skin, slough away dead skin cells and avoid irritation. Natural products such as aloe vera and tea tree oil can be effective in the prevention of hyperkeratosis, while staying out the cold weather and the wind will maintain your healthy ethnic skin.
